Obsessive Fringe Artist. Cumpulsive Activist. Heavily Tatooed. Multimedia Prankster. Probable Alcoholic. Distant relative of Jonny Cash. Any and all of these could describe
Rev. Ralf Bakr, centerpiece to the rotating-lineup, electro-terror project Destroyed For Comfort, who's members and accomplices include many of the under-appreciated Central Texas electronic noise scene. He currently stays in a squat pad in Austin, where he works his day-job ENTIRELY too much, drinks beer and watches a LOT of cartoons. They say he's a pretty nice guy. Bug him on Myspace here.

01. Robotnicka: Discowgirlz
We wanna start this off with a bang, right? Well, how 'bout some French, female-fronted anarcho-situationist electro-rock? Thank me later for introducing you to these cats.

02. Divide And Kreate: Somebody Stole Your Beat
Starting to feel like The Killers and Bloc Party are getting a little played out? Check out how they sound played at the same time. The Cassius/Offspring pairup and the Yazoo/Offspring pairup are also tracks you don't wanna miss. They also have two KLF mashups, but I'm gonna pretend to not notice them so you can grok...

03. Dean Grey: Dr.Who On Holiday
So get this, a mash-up of a song that was already a mash-up. And there's a video too! Bitchin. Check out the links soon before they get taken down. This cat had to have set a record, having a record banned 10 days after it was released. Second little bit of synchronicity; my ex-guitarist from Destroyed For Comfort, Dave Bates, swears that many songs on American Idiot deliberately mimic guitar riffs from classic 80s rock songs and is pretty convincing to that end. Lastly, Jimmy Cauty (ex-KLF and founding member of the Orb) just recently sold the miniature version of the Ford Timelord (the car from The KLF video) on E-Bay (opening bid was 23 Pounds, of course).
Sure beats the hell out of Q-Unit.

04. 8-bit Construction Set: Saucemaster
I am eternally indebted to Decomposure for exposing the 8-bitpeoples record label. For a bit, I thought I was the only person in the world that believed 80s video-game style tracks could justifyably be considered a genre of pop music. These guys take it a step further, referring to their music as 'software' and dressing in laser tag gear, and their logo (a floppy disk on a turntable) is pure dork-core genius.
But personally, I think the star of the 8bitpeoples roster is:

05. I, Cactus: Green Cactus
Holy crap. I haven't been this jealous of a debut release since Cex's 'Oops, I did it again.' And this knucklehead's like half my age. I need to get on the ball. Gorgeous IDM soundscapes, each track with it's own personality.
So what was I doing when I was a teenager? I (like most computer geeks that are now between the ages of 25 and 35) was composing...

06. .MOD music
.MOD music is the product of work with the Fasttracker shareware program, a simulation of the Amiga 2000 sound system, (an expansion of the legendary Commodore 64 sound system), and the way many of us were first exposed to sequencer language. One of the many neat things about these files was that you could insert text into the instrument names, which many people took advantage of, using them for everything from lyrics to political rants to ads and shout-outs. Here's some excellent anonymous examples...
CASTLE.MOD
CYBER.MOD
AWESOME3.MOD
Don't quote me on this, but I heard the gabber performer Doormouse got his start through Tracking music. To play these, you either need to dig up your old WinAmp player, or find a tracking program. The most recent tracking program I could find was 'Milky Tracker', and I'm intrigued by the KLF logo on their front page, but don't be surprised if they ask you for a squant-colored folder.

07. Stereo Total: Megaflittchen
You can't tell from this track, but this is another French agit-prop electro-punk band with an excellent female vocalist. I'm telling ya, I have a weakness for them. Just as well, because she is known for having complicated, tough to translate bilingual French-German lyrics. I put this particular piece up because it reminds me of X-Net's 'Flash Commissar Krash' for some reason.

08. D.J. Vollsuff: Buy Some Cheese
I don't understand German, but I have a feeling that this guy has a similar sense of humor to me. Spooky electro music with giddy, surreal and sometimes hilarious samples. What I jam out to when noone's looking.

09. TISM: For Those About To Rock
The Wikipedia article on TISM opens with 'An anonymous seven piece band from Melbourne, TISM first gained radio airplay with the single "Defecate On My Face"'. Everything about that sentence makes me chuckle. There's an urban legend that these guys broke up to become The Wiggles, which is a rumour so hilarious I wish it was true. Keep your ears peeled in this song for a half-second jab-reference at the shit they went through for sampling the Ted Mulry Gang's 'Jump In My Car' in their song 'There's Gonna Be Sex Tonight'.

10. Negativland: My Favorite Things
Most of you guys reading this have already heard of Negativland, but this is a live recording from the 'True/False Tour' in 2000, which is the first (and only) time I've ever seen them live, since they only tour every 7 or 8 years.
And then there's Dancezig...

11. Psycho-Cop
As I mentioned, I've been really interested in the chip music movement. I read an interview with Malcolm McClaren (yeah, that one) where he was talking about people using modified Game Boys to create live music at an underground warehouse rave. The whole spectacle inspired him to create an entire line of childrens clothing (no, seriously). Well, about a week ago, I was at a noise performance at a local record store, and during a lull, this little mousy guy volunteers to perform, and does a modest but impressive set 10 minute set, playing nothing but a game-boy. Then Realicide stepped up and rocked the house. I told them I'd mention them on this page, only to find out neither one have free mp3s available. Bummer.
And we can't forget...

12. ASSACRE: Cyclops Genesis
Who would have guessed that a lone, gay dinosaur could wreak so much havok? Seriously, I swear this guy plays shows every day. Color me envious.

13. Destroyed For Comfort: Tavistock
This whole EP was recorded at Arlyn Studio, the same place Sublime's self-titled album and the Butthole Surfers 'Electric Larryland' was recorded. The drum machine and guitar were recorded on a computer, but I was stuck doing vocals, by myself, in the orchestral room. Pretty tough to scream at my own reflection in a room the size of a hotel lobby through 7 hours of takes. Enjoy the fruits of my discomfort.
And finally...

14. The K Foundation: K Cera Cera
This song was intended to be released only when world peace is achieved, but until then, you can check it out here. A medley of 'Que Cera Cera' and 'Give Peace A Chance', sung by the Red Choir (yes, the real official choir of the Communist former U.S.S.R.). It just builds and builds and buidls, and if you don't find yourself dancing around your living room when it peaks, then you just don't have any feeling.
